Public transport Buses usually leave Nairobi for Kakamega via Kisumu twice a day, morning & late evening. Journey time is approx. 9 hours over very bumpy roads, with a short break at Nakuru en route.
Once in Kakamega, take a ‘boda-boda’ (bicycle taxi) to the main matatu stand at the market (say you want to take the matatu to Shinyalu ). The matatu will leave once it is full. Others leave for Shinyalu fairly often throughout the day (journey time about 1hr 20mins, but can be longer).
It’s best to try & arrive at Shinyalu in daylight as you then need to take another ‘boda-boda’ from Shinyalu to Isecheno Forest Station, approx. 40mins ride away. It’s a great way to meet some of the locals. Be aware, though, the roads are unsurfaced, there’s no street lights & if it’s raining, it can be a slippery ride.
If you prefer not to travel by ‘boda-boda’, then it is possible to hire a vehicle in Shinyalu, or even all the way from Kakamega town, but this option is very expensive by comparison & you’ll miss out on a great experience.
