Accommodation.
“The Isecheno Bandas are self catering bandas, located at the Isecheno Forest Station in Kakamega Forest. Each of these bandas, built in traditional Luhya hut design, has a bed capacity of three and the entire camp can accommodate up to 18 visitors. In keeping with the tradition of the Luhya, the kitchen, dining and bathrooms are shared. Please bring your own food, fire wood and bedding. Some food may be purchased locally with prior arrangement. Proper walking shoes and wet weather gear are recommended.
The bandas are a model of a community based eco-tourism enterprise. They are intended to encourage income generation for local community, provide incentive for conservation of forest and sustainable utilization of the forest resource. The Bandas are owned by a local community based organization, Kakamega Environmental Education Program (KEEP). This group offers environmental education to locals to enhance the conservation of Kakamega forest. Profits from these bandas will be used to enhance the conservation education program of KEEP, support formal education for bright pupils from the community and other social projects in the area.
Activities here include bird watching, forest walks and game watching, and primate tracking. Guides can be hired for walks in the forest. The key attraction is the Kakamega Forest, the only remnant of the rain forest that once stretched across the continent, it is unique world wide, an island of immense biodiversity. There are 330 species of bird recorded in the forest, it is also home to the Dabraza, Blue and Colobus monkeys. Reptiles and butterflies are also plentiful.” This particular text curtesy of ‘Lets Go Travel’ website at http://www.lets-go-travel.net/?q=node/view/12991 . |
